Welcome to your classroom literacy web resource. Within
these pages, you'll find easy access to a wide assortment of literacy
ideas customized for classroom teachers of students who are learning English
as a second language (ESL) or English as a foreign language (EFL). I've
tried to keep the links on this page particular to this audience, but
you will also find many other relevant literacy resources by visiting
the Teachers homepage or by selecting a particular
grade level from the left sidebar.
Websites
- Bilingual
Education from the National Education Association (NEA) gives an
overview of the concept of bilingual education and a resource list of
links.
- ESL
Literacy Education from Northeast Georgia offers a newsletter of
ESL news and resources, an ESL adult literacy e-mail forum sponsored
by the National Institute for Literacy, answers to frequently asked
questions, a searchable database of ERIC articles, and print and multimedia
resources.
- ESL Magazine Online
includes a section on feature
articles and Christine Meloni's NetWorthy
Column, a column that describes websites that can be used as tools
ing the ESL classroom.
- Internet
TESL Journal is a monthly
web publication for ESL teachers. Articles, Research Papers, Lessons

- National Center
for Adult ESL Education (NCLE) has news, articles,
resource compilations and a listserv to join with others learning about
adult ESL Literacy. This may be a helpful resource for teachers wanting
to assist non-English speaking parents.

Clearinghouse for Bilingual Education Take a site
tour to learn how to search for information, exchange ideas, view
publications or get the latest news.
- Teaching
English as a Second or Foreign Language (TESEL-EJ)
is a full text online journal that publishes articles of interest to
people who teach ESL.

Instructional Strategies
- Bable
Fish Translator helps translate newsletters, messages home and any
other communication from English into five other languages. It's not
a perfect translation, but it's a start.
- Dave's ESL Cafe
is "the Internet's Meeting Place for ESL/EFL Students and Teachers
from Around the World!" This award winning website gets over one
million hits a month...check it out.
- EFL
Playhouse is a resource for teachers of young
learners of English. It is chock full of songs, arts and crafts, fingerplays,
recipes, games, tongue twisters, phonemic awareness activities and teaching
tips.
- Breaking New English offers ready-to-use current affairs lessons. Graded news articles, listening and communicative activities are uploaded daily.
- Holiday
Zone will provide you and your students with
background information, craft ideas, and language activities associated
with most American holidays.

Links is a compilation of ideas by Lauren Rosen for using WWW resources

Languages, Russian, and African Languages are annotated as well.

- English Daily provides free exercises, idioms, common abbreviations, slang, proverbs, and other resources for learning English online.
- English the Easy Way is a website devoted to explaining English so that everyone can understand.
- ESL Net:

library, interactive Ask
Julie section, and the popular Real
English Zone with cool, multimedia lessons.
- Learn English
Online from Global English. You can view the site in 11 languages
including English and preview trial
online courses for free, but you need to pay to actually take the
courses. Non-subscribers can still use the online
translation tools, play
fun quiz games. and practice vocabulary, listening and grammar in
the skills
center.
- Teach English in Asia offers a variety of ESL/EFL games and activities categorized by target student population, as well as type of skill to be developed.
- Little
Explorers Dictionary from Enchanted Learning
has over 1,800 illustrated dictionary entries that can be read in English,
Spanish, French, German or Portuguese. Each word also comes with a picture
and most link to an informational page like an encyclopedia. It's perfect
for young or older children learning new vocabulary.
- English Portal International offers online English courses and personal study plans. You do need to sign up and pay to take the courses, but non-subscribers are welcome to play the English Portal Games.
